The top of the box office charts is currently being gatecrashed by football, with FIFA World Cup 2026 fixtures drawing audiences into theatres. But look past the sporting headlines, and the real story is a Bollywood-Tollywood showdown that’s defining the theatrical week.

The World Cup Effect

For the first time in this tracking cycle, live sports broadcasts are claiming the top ranks. While the numbers are modest—Portugal Vs Uzbekistan and Argentina Vs Austria each earned ₹0.01Cr—their placement indicates a niche theatrical draw for fan screenings. However, the commercial heavyweights are sitting comfortably below them, where the true box office battle is unfolding.

Bollywood Brushes Off Competition

Cocktail 2 remains the undisputed king of the current lineup. With a six-day India net of ₹60.90Cr and a worldwide gross of ₹95.00Cr, this Bollywood sequel has demonstrated genuine cross-market strength. It has a commanding lead over its nearest rival, Maa Inti Bangaaram, which is having a stellar run of its own at ₹30.70Cr (India net) and ₹51.32Cr worldwide. The ₹30Cr gap between these two suggests Cocktail 2 has captured the mass family audience effectively, while the Tollywood title is holding firm for its core market.

Surprises and Stumbles

The most eye-popping figure sits at #6. Toy Story 5 (3D) has a modest India net of ₹5.99Cr, yet its worldwide gross stands at a staggering ₹2,950.56Cr. This extreme ratio tells you that Pixar’s latest is a global juggernaut, but its Indian run is shockingly weak—likely crushed by local blockbuster competition.

Meanwhile, Balan: The Boy (Mollywood) is quietly collecting ₹9.33Cr in India and ₹19.31Cr worldwide, showing respectable legs for a regional title. The real outlier, however, is Nooru Saami (Kollywood), which reports a negative worldwide vs. India net variance (₹4.80Cr global vs. ₹4.86Cr India)—a data anomaly likely due to pending international reporting.

Check back tomorrow as the weekend numbers settle and we see whether the FIFA broadcasts hold their ground or get benched by the returning heavyweights.
